THE MORRIS GARDEN CENTER
We grew an experimental garden this summer of 2008. We tried many varieties of Heirloom vegetables to find what would work best in our climate and growing conditions.
Above pictures are some of the Heirloom tomatoes we tried. We did very well with the beefsteak varieties and some of the smaller salad types. We were impressed with the taste and quantity we could grow on one vine.
We grew about 150 ft of Clemson Spineless Okra. At almost every size we picked from small 2-3" to large 7-8" the okra was tender. We had very few "woody" pods. This will be a popular addition to our garden next year too. We harvested over 10lbs for the freezer, 3 cases of okra pickles, 3 cases of okra and stewed tomatoes and 2 cases of okra and zuchini and over a gallon of sliced and dehydrated okra.( Not to mention all we gave to friends and neighbors.)
We grew several colors and sizes of sunflowers just for the cut flowers. Next year we will add additional varieties and colors.
We also grew corn, both sweet white and sweet yellow. Although the corn didn't grow very high, we had bumper crops. The yellow did the best giving us more than 50 ears per picking in the 100 ft we planted. We also planted several varieties of squash, melons, peppers, pumpkins, tomatillos, chard, lettuce and eggplant.
We are planning our Spring 2009 garden at this moment! We are hoping to offer more in the way of home canning favorites as well as the usual fresh fare. We are considering selling "shares" this year, if this is something you might be interested in contact me for details.
